Animal Rescue and
Humane Community Waiting for Mayor Antonio
Villaraigosa's First Move
—
Animal Activists and Rescue Organizations
overwhelmingly supported Antonio Villaraigosa's
Mayoral Candidacy and now they are waiting for his
first move. —
In Honor of Antonio Villaraigosa’s
First Day as Mayor, with his inauguration closing off
downtown all day Friday for the festivities, animal
rescue activists were sending out communications
reminding him and his staff about his promises to the
humane community.
Mayor Villaraigosa’s plans “to Make Los Angeles Animal
Friendly,” were a campaign platform that covered key
issues concerning the L.A. Department of Animal
Services, the Zoo and other animal related issues.
Mayor Villaraigosa promised real accountability in the
Department of Animal Services, to reduce animal
over-population and to hold the department accountable
for creating a legitimate plan to reduce euthanasia
and make real progress to involve the humane community
as partners with the department. Additionally he plans
to create animal friendly shelters, build more dog
parks, promote education about animals in schools and
communities, and to enforce animal abuse laws.
Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa’s, words on January 9,
2005 at the Citizens for a Humane Los Angeles, Los
Angeles Mayoral Convention Beverly Garland Holiday
Inn, North Hollywood has been circulated like a mantra
amongst the rescue, humane and animal community in
anticipation of his first days in office.

With shelters at bursting capacity, and rescue workers
and organizations stretched thin by the cost of
bailing out animals to prevent euthanasia, the time
cannot be of greater essence than now.
